Kusum Kanguru Peak Climbing - Trip Overview

Amidst all the climbing peaks in the Everest region, Kusum Kanguru Peak, at 6,376 metres, is arduous to climb. Climbers climb Kusum Kanguru from Southeast and North Ridge, where both routes seem challenging and technically demanding. These three snow-filled rocky peaks in the Everest region sit on the border between pristine Dudh Koshi and the beautiful Hinku valley on the south and north.

Even though Kusum Kanguru is a six thousand metre climbing peak, it is technically demanding. Intermediate mountaineers find it arduous to climb. Ice walls, exposed ridges, rocky faces, and several crevasses make climbing Kusum Kanguru peak challenging.

The breathtaking view of mountains in the Mahalangur range is best visible from the Kusum Kanguru summit. Everest at 8,848 metres, Lhotse at 8,516 metres, Nuptse at 7,855 metres, Thamserku at 6,623 metres, Khangtega, Makalu at 8,463 metres, and many others are utter visible from the top of Kusum Kanguru peak. Further, Namche Bazar and Kongde on the backdrop make the landscape inspiring.

Kusum Kanguru Peak Climbing- Routes

Climbers approach Kusum Kanguru via two routes.

Kusum Kanguru Peak Climb from Southeast Ridge.

Climbing Kusum Kanguru via Hinku valley follows the Southeast Ridge of the peak. Climbers hike to Kusum Kanguru base camp via Lukla for 5 days. Climbers ascend to high camp, advanced camp, and the summit from base camp. Thus, it takes some days to acclimatise and climb preparations to summit Kusum Kanguru.

Kusum Kanguru Peak Climb from North Ridge.

The climb of Kusum Kanguru peak from the Northridge side is from the Monjo side. Monjo is a  checkpoint for Everest region travellers. The hike is on a landscape filled with grassland and scree to the base camp. From the Kusum Kanguru base camp, it will take a few days to reach the summit via high camps and advanced camps. In between, you'll be acclimatising and training the climbing skills.

Kusum Kanguru Peak Climbing - Difficulty

Rated as a challenging climbing peak in Nepal, Kusum Kanguru has five prominent ridges. Among these, climbers prefer climbing this peak via North Ridge. North Ridge of Kusum Kanguru is the most spectacular landscape among the five. The East Summit, Main Summit, and West Summit of Kusum Kanguru at 6,358 metres, 6,367 metres, and 5,579 metres are best for climbing.

The ridges and ice walls demand technical expertise from climbers. An experienced climber with proper physical endurance can make it to the summit of Kusum Kanguru.

With its elevation of 6,367 meters (20,884 feet), technical sections, steep slopes, and rugged terrain, the climb requires climbers to be proficient in using mountaineering equipment and techniques. Acclimatization to the high altitude is crucial, as is being prepared for unpredictable weather conditions. The climb demands mental determination, physical endurance, and a respectful approach to the mountains. Having the guidance of experienced climbers and support staff can significantly enhance safety and increase the chances of a successful summit bid.

The cost of a 17-day Kanguru Peak Climbing expedition can vary depending on several factors, including the trekking agency or operator chosen, the level of services and support provided, and any additional services included in the package. Generally, the cost for a 17-day Kanguru Peak Climbing expedition can range from around $4,000 to $8,000 or more. This cost typically includes services such as experienced climbing guides, porters, accommodation during the climb, meals, climbing permits, transportation to and from the starting point, and necessary climbing equipment. It is important to thoroughly research and compare different operators to ensure you choose a reputable and experienced company that offers the necessary support, safety measures, and quality services for a successful climbing experience.

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a potential risk during the trip to Kusum Kanguru Peak Climbing. With the peak's elevation of 6,367 meters (20,884 feet), climbers are susceptible to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue due to the reduced oxygen levels at high altitudes. To mitigate this risk, a gradual ascent with regular acclimatization days is crucial. Climbers should stay well-hydrated, maintain a balanced diet, and listen to their bodies for any signs of discomfort. Communication with experienced guides is essential to monitor symptoms and determine the appropriate course of action, which may include descending to lower altitudes for medical attention if necessary. By being vigilant and taking proper precautions, climbers can reduce the chances of altitude sickness and have a safer and more enjoyable experience on Kusum Kanguru Peak.

The best months for climbing Kusum Kanguru Peak are generally during the spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer stable weather conditions, clear skies, and relatively warmer temperatures, making them ideal for climbing and trekking in the Everest region. During spring, climbers can enjoy beautiful blossoming rhododendron forests and mild temperatures, while autumn offers stunning mountain views, favorable climbing conditions, and comfortable daytime temperatures. It is important to note that weather conditions can vary, and it is recommended to check with local authorities and experienced climbing operators for the most up-to-date information and to plan your climb accordingly.

While it is technically possible to climb Kusum Kanguru Peak solo, it is generally not recommended. The peak poses several challenges, including technical sections, steep slopes, and unpredictable weather conditions. Climbing solo increases the risks involved, as there is no immediate assistance or support in case of emergencies or accidents. Having a team of experienced climbers, guides, and porters provides crucial safety measures, support, and shared responsibilities. They can also offer guidance, expertise, and help in navigating the route and managing any potential risks. If you do decide to climb solo, it is essential to have extensive mountaineering experience, be well-prepared, and have a comprehensive understanding of the route, weather patterns, and safety protocols.

There are multiple routes available for climbers to ascend Kusum Kanguru Peak, with the two most common routes being the South Ridge route and the West Face route. The South Ridge route follows the classic Everest Base Camp trail from Lukla, veering off towards Thuli Kharka and then ascending via the South Ridge. This route requires technical skills and offers stunning views along the way. The West Face route, on the other hand, provides a more direct ascent with steeper slopes and greater challenges. This route demands advanced mountaineering skills but rewards climbers with a more adventurous and less crowded experience. Other variations and combinations of routes can also be explored based on individual preferences and experience levels. It is crucial to consult with experienced climbing guides to determine the most suitable route and ensure a safe and successful climb to the summit of Kusum Kanguru Peak.

The shortest route while climbing Kusum Kanguru Peak is typically the West Face route. This route offers a more direct ascent to the summit, with a focus on efficiency and shorter distance. It bypasses some of the longer sections of the traditional South Ridge route, reducing the overall trekking distance and time. However, it is important to note that the West Face route is also more challenging and requires advanced mountaineering skills due to its steep slopes and technical sections. While it may be the shortest in terms of distance, climbers should carefully assess their abilities, experience, and comfort level with the technical demands of this route before embarking on the ascent. Safety should always be a top priority, and it is advisable to consult with experienced climbing guides to determine the most appropriate route based on individual capabilities.

While it is not mandatory to have a guide and porter for Kusum Kanguru Peak Climbing, it is highly recommended to hire them for a safer and more enjoyable climbing experience. Here are the reasons why:

In general, credit card payment facilities are limited along the trail to Kusum Kanguru Peak. Due to the remote and mountainous nature of the region, it is advisable to carry sufficient cash in Nepalese Rupees (NPR) to cover your expenses during the trek. While some major towns along the route may have a few establishments that accept credit cards, it is still best to be prepared with cash as backup, as credit card acceptance may not be reliable or widely available. ATMs are also limited in remote areas, so it is recommended to withdraw cash beforehand and inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid any card-related issues.
