You may think climbing the Everest summit is a difficult task in the Himalayas. It's obvious to take it as an arduous climb. In reality, the arduous climb on the Everest expedition is crossing Khumbu Icefall en route to the South Col of Everest. The 1.6 mile long Khumbu Icefall over Khumbu glacier is the mandatory route for Lhotse, Everest, and Nuptse summit climb.
For most, the Khumbu glacier determines the success of the Everest summit. Khumbu icefall, the first hurdle of the deadliest climb of Khumbu Glacier, shifts 2 metres on each sunny day. Hence, Khumbu Icefall, often termed a floating river of ice, is constantly moving at a high pace.
For high-altitude adventurers, climbing the 2000-foot-shifting Khumbu Icefall is a dream thrill. Another element to this thrill is the crevasses over icefall range from 1 metre to 10 metres. The Sherpa guides join two to three aluminium ladders to make a bridge over these crevasses. By any chance, if you fall into Khumbu Icefall crevasses, you'll surely die. Hence, before the sunrise, to avoid crevasses moving, climbers climb Khumbu Icefall as early as 3 am.
Climbing Khumbu Icefall is life-threatening, but adventure lovers find it a divine pleasure. The thrill of climbing is climbing the ladders on the wall without resting. You are not allowed to rest while climbing because the icefall shifts continuously. People call it Popcorn Valley because avalanches and icefalls are unpredictable in Khumbu Icefall. Large boulders of falling ice blocks injure climbers and often lead to fatality. Hence, highly technical climbers are the ones to succeed in the climb and enjoy the thrill.
The first section climb of Khumbu Icefall is over 20-60 steep ridges and walls. The flat terrain, known as "Football Field", is thick snow hard surface. This terrain of Khumbu Icefall marks the midway of the 1.6 miles climb. It is an ideal place for eating foods, rehydrating, resting, and regaining some energy level. This West face, located on a flat surface, sees the morning sun only after 9 am.
The Upper Icefall climbs on the almost vertical ladder. Climbers often find this region confusing, believing that they are on the end of Khumbu Icefall, but it's not. The false summit puts psychological disbelief on climbers. The terrain to Camp I, from False Summit, is pretty flat that takes you to Western CWM. Reaching Everest Camp One takes one hour.
Climbing Khumbu icefall is not for everyone. The Government of Nepal has its own set of rules for granting permits for the Khumbu Icefall expedition.
Safety has to be the primary concern of climbers at Khumbu Icefall. World Expedition Nepal concerns the safety of our climbers, porters, and guides on expeditions. Hence, our climbing guides and Sherpa will look after you 24/7.
