Tharpu Chuli, also known as Tent Peak, is a captivating mountain peak situated in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Standing at an altitude of 5,663 meters (18,575 feet), Tharpu Chuli offers an exciting and relatively less technical climbing experience, making it suitable for climbers with moderate mountaineering skills. The climb involves traversing through beautiful landscapes, including lush forests, terraced fields, and high-altitude alpine meadows. The journey to the summit rewards climbers with stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Tharpu Chuli's accessibility and scenic beauty make it a popular choice for adventurers seeking a memorable and fulfilling mountaineering experience in the Himalayas.
The traveller's favourite trekking destination, Annapurna Region, is home to countless 6000 metres peaks. These peaks are best for trekkers to push themselves further after reaching the base camps. Annapurna Base Camp via Machhapuchhre Base Camp is the trekkers' favourite destination. To go further, you'll find the ultimate climbing experience of Tharpu Chuli Peak at 5,633 metres. It's not everyone's cup of tea. But with adequate training and previous climbing experience, you can scale the summit of Tharpu Chuli Peak.
Tharpu Chuli Peak, often termed Tent Peak, sits in the centre of the Annapurna region. Due to its shape like a tent, Jimmy Roberts, the first summiteer of this peak, named it Tent Peak. He submitted this peak from the Southwest Ridge, but now, climbers also follow the West Face ridge to climb this peak. From alpine grading, this peak falls in the PD category. Thus, climbing this peak includes crossing several glaciers and requires technical knowledge. Also, some stiff ridges and vertical climbs make it arduous for climbers to navigate. You can either climb some 6000 metres peak or trek some high passes over 5,500 metres to prepare for this peak climb.
We'll hike on the Annapurna Base Camp route throughout the Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing expedition. The lush forest of Oak and Pine, vivid rhododendron forest, and stone-paved trails are best for a day hike. Thus, the trekking and climbing throughout this expedition give you a soothing panoramic view of the Annapurna region. This place is a heaven of natural aesthetics and mountains.
From the Tharpu Chuli Peak summit, the majestic views of some 7000 and two 8000 metre peaks and countless peaks below 6000 metres stand tall. Annapurna I at 8,091 metres, Annapurna II at 7,937 metres, Dhaulagiri at 8,167 metres, and Annapurna III and IV at 7,525 metres are utterly visible. Further, Nilgiri at 7,041 metres, Machhapuchhre at 6,998 metres, Lamjung, and Tukuche Peak are best visible.
The fantastic Tharpu Chuli Climbing begins as we drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. If you want to fly to Pokhara, inform us before booking this trip. Then we'll head to Naya Pul for about four hours on a private vehicle drive and then hike to Tikhedhunga.
The agricultural fields of paddy, lush forests, and the serene trail become perfect for a day hike. We'll make our hike along the Modi Khola. The swirling waterfalls, natural springs, Gurung villages, and exotic animals sightseeing are primary attractions of day hikes.
Ghandruk, Ghorepani, and Poon Hill are the best places for overnight stays. Also, these hilltops are best for viewing early sunrise. We'll make our hike further to Dovan, Deurali, and Annapurna Base Camp at 4,000 metres via Machhapuchhre Base Camp at 3,700 metres.
We'll have two days of acclimatisation before reaching Annapurna Base Camp. We'll first acclimatise at Annapurna Base Camp, have some training sessions, and stay overnight at our tented camps.
To make our way up to the High Camp of Tharpu Chuli, we'll hike for four hours. We'll stay here overnight and make a summit push early in the morning the next day. Our climbing guides will assist you throughout this expedition. Thus, you'll climb safely to the Tharpu Chuli summit and then back to Machhapuchhre Base Camp.
From MBC, we'll head to Sinuwa, Potana, and back to Pokhara. This will mark our successful completion of Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing and expedition.
Tharpu Peak climbing is a novice to the intermediate level alpine peak. Thus, proper trekking and climbing gears are crucial to make this climbing safe and comfortable.
Alpine climbing harnesses, trekking/climbing poles, mountain boots, crampons, and lightweight ice axes are necessary gears for climbing Tharpu Peak. For the upper body, you can backpack sleeves, fleeces, waterproof jackets, down jackets, gloves, etc.
Other gears include headwear, the lower body wear, sleeping gears, etc. Headlamps, lip balms, sunscreen, water bottles, and electrolyte powder are also things to backpack.
These are the primary things to pack for this trip. Our climbing guide will send you the list of gears you should buy for this trip once you book the Tharpu Peak Climbing expedition with us.
We recommend our valued clients buy decent travel insurance before joining the team. The reason is that even in the worst conditions, you'll get a helicopter evacuation. Things in the mountains can turn bad anytime. Also, you may get sick out of nowhere. Under unforeseen conditions, your insurance pays you medical bills, hospitalisation charges, and evacuation costs. It saves you thousands of dollars.
Physical fitness is a must for Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing. You can participate in running, hiking, and mini-marathons to prepare for this expedition. Physical fitness comes in handy when you trek for 6 hours a day on the Annapurna Base Camp trekking route. On the summit day, you have to hike for 8 hours to ascend and descend. Thus, endurance is the key to reaching the summit.
Since this peak is PD graded, some climbing techniques are crucial for climbers. Previous high altitude trekking experience helps you to trek to Annapurna Base Camp. On top, some 6000 metres of climbing experience will be better.
March to May and September to November are the best times of the year for Tharpu Chuli Peak climbing. The clear weather and mild climate make the surrounding landscape spectacular. The sightseeing of Annapurna Range, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchre becomes unmatched in these months. The rain-free days make the day hike unobstructed. Yes, there is a risk of altitude sickness during the trip to Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing, especially as you ascend to higher altitudes. Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), occurs when you ascend to high elevations too quickly, and your body doesn't have enough time to acclimatize to the reduced oxygen levels at higher altitudes.
Tharpu Chuli Peak is situated at an elevation of 5,663 meters (18,575 feet), and the trek to reach the base camp involves gaining significant altitude. The starting point of the trek, which is around 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) in Pokhara, quickly rises to higher altitudes as you progress through the trek.
To minimize the risk of altitude sickness during the Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing trip, it is crucial to follow these guidelines:
Gradual Ascent:
Take a slow and steady approach during the trek to allow your body time to acclimatize. Avoid rapid altitude gains.
Proper Acclimatization:
Spend an extra day or two at intermediate altitudes to acclimatize. Rest and acclimatization days are often included in the trekking itinerary.
Stay Hydrated:
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as dehydration can worsen altitude sickness symptoms.
Avoid Alcohol and Smoking:
Avoid alcohol and smoking during the ascent, as they can dehydrate the body and hinder acclimatization.
Listen to Your Body:
Pay attention to any signs of altitude sickness, such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, and difficulty breathing. Inform your guide immediately if you experience any symptoms.
Descend if Necessary:
If symptoms of altitude sickness worsen or become severe, descend to a lower altitude immediately. Prompt action is crucial to prevent serious complications.
Medication:
Consider carrying medication such as acetazolamide (Diamox) to help prevent or alleviate mild symptoms of altitude sickness. However, always consult with a doctor before taking any medication.

Snacks: You can find snacks and energy bars at some teahouses or small shops along the trail. It's a good idea to carry some of your favorite snacks as well.
Drinking Water: Bottled water is available at teahouses, but it can be expensive and also contributes to plastic waste. It's recommended to bring a reusable water bottle and use water purification tablets or filters to treat tap water or water from natural sources.
