Upper Mustang, formerly known as Kingdom of Lo, is one of the most visited trekking regions of Nepal. The region has different features unlike other trekking destinations of Nepal. Upper Mustang is a dry and beautiful valley which lies in the trans- Himalayan range of Nepal. The Mustang’s status as a kingdom ended in 2008 after Nepal became a republic state. The region still has their king in the capital city Lo Manthang. Upper Mustang was a restricted area until 1992. It is still one of the most preserved trekking regions of the world and requires special permit to visit this region.
This Upper Mustang Trek 17 Day takes you to the forbidden Kingdom of Lo where you can explore its rich unique natural beauty, cultures, lifestyles and tradition. The people here still speak the traditional Tibetan languages and follow Tibetan Buddhism. The people of Upper Mustang are highly influenced by Tibetan culture and it is highly preserved by the isolation of the region from the outside world. The people of Upper Mustang are engaged in various sectors like tourism, animal husbandry and trade. The barren hills, deserted landscapes, the unique isolated cultures and warm hospitality of the locals are some of the major highlights of this trek.
Upper Mustang Trekking Permit
Upper Mustang is a forbidden kingdom of Lo. To visit this region two special permit is required for foreigners. They are Upper Mustang trekking permit and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) Foreigners have to pay USD 500 each person for 10 days and USD 50 for extra day. The permit starts from Kagbeni and end at Kagbeni village of Mustang.NPR 226 is charged for ACAP permits for foreigners of SAARC countries and NPR 2260 is charged for foreigners from SAARC countries. The ACAP permits have no limits and the Upper mustang trek permit starts from Kagbeni and ends at Kagbeni.

After breakfast in the morning we go for the Kathmandu sightseeing tour. Sight-seeing around Kathmandu valley which includes the Hindu temple, Pashupatinath (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) & the biggest Buddhist Stupa at Boudhanath. Also visit Monkey Temple the Soyambhunath (2000 years old Stupa) and visit Patan city of fine arts and finally back to hotel. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Early in the morning after having breakfast we will take a ride to the city of Lakes, Pokhara following Trishuli River. During our journey we will see villages, paddy fields and many religious sites and a historical town of Bandipur.Afternoon can be enjoyed by the lake as the hotel is located near to the lake. (5-6 hours drive). Stay Overnight at hotel in Pokhara
We will have our breakfast in Pokhara and take a scenic flight to Jomsom. Jomsom is the headquarter of Mustang district. After landing we will meet the rest of our team members and start our trek. During trekking we can picturesque peaks of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak and Dhampus are spectacular all the way. Kagbeni provides its narrow alleyways and tunnels, irrigation canals, green fields of wheat and barley. Overnight in Kagbeni
:The trek starts after breakfast. From Chile you will follow the twist and turns trial following Kali Gandaki Riverbed. During the trials you will pass through the traditional villages of Tangbe and Chhusang. You can explore the narrow lanes of the villages and their rich architectures. The trial passes through fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. After leaving the Kali Gandaki valley the trial climbs steeply up a rocky gully to Chele. You will notice a slight change in the cultures of people. Overnight at Chele.
After having breakfast at Geling the trek begins. The trek goes through desert like trials and then descends to Samar village passing some Chortens on the ridge. You will further climb above Samar village and then again descend into a large gorge crossing some fertile field and streams. The trial climbs upto a ridge at 3800m and then passes by another pass and again descends to Shyangmochen. A final gentle climb from here will take you to Geling. Overnight at Guesthouse.
After having breakfast at Geling the trek begins with a gentle climb to Nyi La pass and descends below the blue, grey and red cliffs. You will cross a steel suspension bridge above Tangmar Chu river pass by one of the longest and spectacular Mani walls of Nepal. You will again climb above another pass at 3600m, from the pass the trial descents to Charang village. You will visit huge five strayed white Dzong and red Gompa and observe collection of statues and Thankas and large paintings of seated Buddha’s. Overnight at Charang village.
After having breakfast at Charang village, the trek begins. Today you will visit two villages on your trial. The steep climb takes you to Lo Gekar Gompa which is one of the oldest Gompa of Nepal and older than Samye Gompa of Tibet. You will also visit 1200 years old Ghar Gompa which is famous for its rock paintings. The Gompa has a great significance for the people of this region. It is believed that if anyone makes a wish at Ghar Gompa their wish is fulfilled. From here the trek continues to Lo Manthang. There are few climbing until you reach to Lo Manthang. The view of the city Lo Manthang from the ridge is spectacular. A short descent from here takes you to the plateau of Lo Manthang.
From Lo Manthang a two hours walk will take you to Namgyal Gompa. It is an important monastery for the local community and also serves as a local court. After visiting the Gompa you will further trek to Tingkhar which is the last main village of the northwest Lo Manthang. After visiting you will return back to Lo Manthang for overnight stay.
After having breakfast at Lo Manthang you will walk straight to Dhi Pass at 4,100m and descends down to Dhi village. The trials are relatively difficult but the views are totally rewarding. Dhi village is one of the most prosperous village of Lo Manthang and is settled in a very suitable place. After crossing a river the trial goes through the left bank and we then reach the village of Yara village. Overnight at Yara village.
You will have your breakfast at Yara village and then start your trek to Tange. The trek follows the riverside trial and cross a river from Damodar Kunda which is one of the scared lakes for Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. After crossing the river the trial climbs high above a pass of 3,850m. The trial then goes through a bare hill and descends to Tangbe village at an elevation of 3,370m. Overnight at Tangbe village.
The trek begins with a walk through a steep ridge of hills which provides magnificent views of the wind craved hills. The village of Tetang is tucked in between two hills which avoids the strong wind that hits the entire Kali Gandaki Valley. The trek is around 9 hours today. Overnight in a Guest House.
From Chusang you will trek to Muktinath. It is a famous religious temple for Hindus and Buddhist. There are 108 natural taps and pilgrims take shower even in the freezing temperature. After visiting the temple you will drive to Jomsom following the dusty trials. Overnight in Jomsom.
From Jomsom a 30 minute flight will take you to a beautiful city of Lakes Pokhara. You can roam around the city or take rest at hotel. Overnight at Pokhara.
You will have a leisure day at Pokhara today. Pokhara is a beautiful city and one of the famous tourist destination of Nepal. There are many adventures you can do in Pokhara such as boating, paragliding, cycling etc. You can visit different places and taste different foods here. Overnight at Pokhara.
You will drive back to Kathmandu from Pokhara today. The driver will drop you to the respective hotel. You can rest or roam around the city.
